TEAC Announces Industry's First 4X12 CD-Recordable Drive; CD-R55S Features 4X Write, 12X Read and a Low 165ms Average Access Time.

, CD-Recordable and removable storage technology, Wednesday introduced the newest addition to its Data Storage Products Division, the CD-R (CD-Recordable) A writable CD technology using a type of compact disc that can be recorded, but not erased (CD-Rs are "write once" discs).  again has positioned itself at the forefront of CD-R technology.

The drive will be available the week of Sept. 1, 1997, to TEAC's OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  customers and will subsequently be available to their retail distribution channel, in a variety of solutions, in October 1997. "TEAC is committed to manufacturing the highest quality CD-R drives," stated Les Luzar, division manager for TEAC's Data Storage Products Division. "With the new 4X12, we are taking the performance of this technology to a new level; in fact, no other CD-Recordable drive manufacturer today has matched this standard."

It supports CD-ROM standards such as 8 cm or 12 cm disks, Audio CD, CD-ROM mode 1 and mode 2, XA ready, CD-I (Compact Disc-Interactive) A compact disc format developed by Philips and Sony that held text, audio and animated graphics. It required a CD-I player that contained its own operating system. , multisession A compact disc capability in which data are recorded in more than one session. Each subsequent recording session can be linked to the previous so that they all appear as one. Each session adds overhead on the disc, because lead-in and lead-out sectors must be recorded each time, which  Photo CD, Video CD and Enhanced CD. The drive can write 650MB of information in approximately 15 minutes and reads all CD-ROM formats at 12X speed. Hence, it delivers twice the read and write speeds of today's popular 2X6 CD-Recordable drives.

The drive will support the industry's latest packet-writing software, as well as major CD-R mastering software programs, including: CeQuadrat WinOnCD 3.0, Adaptec Easy CD Pro, Elcktroson GEAR, NTI NTI NewTech Infosystems (software company, Irvine, California)

 CD-Maker and Astarte Toast. Additionally, the CD-R55S supports Windows 3.1x, Windows 95, Windows NT, Unix and Macintosh operating systems.
