TDK Semiconductor Introduces New High Performance IC for SCART Switching; Performs for Both Analog Audio and Video Signals.

TUSTIN, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 6, 1998--TDK Semiconductor Corp., a leader in the design and manufacture of communication semiconductors for worldwide markets, is introducing the first in its new line of multimedia products, a new high performance IC specifically designed to manage the SCART Scart or SCART

Electronics a plug-and-socket system which carries pictures and sound, used in home entertainment systems
switching function for European applications. The new device, designated the AVPro(TM) 5003, is a low cost IC that implements a complete three-SCART interface and control in a single chip.

The AVPro 5003 accepts analog audio and video inputs from three external sources, typically a video encoder IC, an auxiliary SCART connector (Syndicat Français des Constructeurs d'Appareils Radio et Télévision connector) An audio visual connector used to hook up VCRs and DVD players to TV sets and audio equipment. , and a VCR VCR: see videocassette recorder.

SCART connector. The input signals from these sources are presented to a set of internal multiplexers that perform the SCART switching function. The device provides outputs to drive a TV SCART connector and a RF modulator. The video outputs are buffered to drive 150 (OMEGA) loads. The audio outputs are buffered to provide 2 Vrms output into 600 ohms.

Semiconductor's multimedia business unit: "The new AVPro 5003 offers the highest level of integration available for SCART control. In addition to providing all of the switching functions for three SCART connectors, the 5003 also integrates the output drivers for both the audio and the video signals. The use of a +/-5V supply on the audio drivers further eliminates the need for the large AC coupling capacitors typically used in SCART implementations."

Typical product applications for the device include digital satellite and cable receivers, televisions and other TV peripherals. The device is available in a 64-lead QFP (Quad FlatPack) A square, surface mount chip package that has leads on all four sides and comes in several varieties. PQFP (Plastic QFP) may refer to all of the following QFP types. All quad flatpacks use gull-wing leads, except for the CQFP, which stick straight out.  package. Samples and evaluation boards are currently available, with production planned for September 1998. Pricing for the 5003 is less than $4 in 10,000 unit quantities.
