TDG Aerospace, a global leader in aircraft safety solutions today introduced the Universal Fault Interrupter (UFI 3000(TM)), a new safety product designed to prevent ignition sources resulting from arcing events in aircraft electrical systems. Using patent-pending technology developed by TDG, the UFI 3000 picks up where other fault detection devices leave off. By using three current sensors, one for each phase, the UFI 3000 rapidly detects ground faults, as well as shorts within pump motors and other critical areas of the aircraft, making it the only product of its kind to detect and prevent line-to-line, line-to-ground and arc faults simultaneously.

Hailed by industry experts throughout the field, the patent-pending UFI 3000 is an enhanced alternative to current arc-fault circuit breaker (AFCB) technology. Today's AFCB designs take up to several hundred milliseconds to detect a fault condition before tripping. In certain conditions, this lag time could prove to be disastrous. Using proprietary algorithms, the UFI 3000 acts immediately by identifying the fault condition and quickly removing power from the affected circuit. A corresponding LED indicator on the external surface of the unit identifies which type of fault has occurred. Varying load parameters can also be programmed into the UFI 3000's non-volatile memory, which allows it to detect faults even during times of high electrical current, such as motor start up. Additionally, the UFI 3000 has a data port that allows technicians to access historical data, including which line the fault occurred in, maximum current measured, and time of fault (+/-10 seconds) -- information which can prove invaluable for troubleshooting.

The UFI 3000 is currently in the final stages of FAA approval, with certification for B737-300 fuel boost pump systems expected in mid-2004. As the UFI 3000 is a comprehensive solution for fault detection, it will assist commercial airlines in complying with any ground fault interrupter (GFI) requirements associated with SFAR 88.
