TCI MOVES 800 SERVICE TO AT&T IN $23-MILLION CONTRACT

DENVER, Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- TCI (Tele-Communications Inc.), the nation's largest cable television company, has awarded AT&T (NYSE: T) a three-year, $23-million contract that includes moving its 800 service to AT&T from other vendors.
In addition to consolidating all of its toll-free services with a single vendor, the contract for AT&T's Virtual Telecommunications Network provides TCI with a completely customized voice and data network for its offices and subsidiaries nationwide.
"This agreement enables AT&T to strengthen its important relationships with TCI," said Jack Schiefer, branch manager in AT&T's Business Communications Services Unit. "And it allows us to offer TCI the kind of network quality and reliability they expect from their communications vendor."
The custom network will help enable TCI to better meet the telephone and data needs of its customers and operating units. AT&T will also provide TCI with centralized, state-of-the-art service management to oversee network performance, consolidated billing and network maintenance.
TCI will use the custom network to serve its cable companies and selected subsidiaries. The network will be used for order taking, billing inquiries, customers and dealer service and communications between computers, adding speed and reliability to those transactions.
In 1991, TCI, AT&T Network Systems and U.S. West announced a cooperative effort to gauge consumer demand for two types of Viewer- Controlled Cable Television, for which AT&T is supplying hardware and software designed by AT&T Bell Laboratories. In addition, TCI signed a letter of intent late last year to purchase up to one million set-top compressed digital terminals from AT&T and General Instrument Corp. The equipment will be used in rolling out to its cable customers a wide range of additional television programming options, delivered in a compressed digital format.
