TCI's Spectrum Management System for Zimbabwe: Final Acceptance Testing Passes with Flying Colors, On Schedule.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 20, 1997--Final acceptance testing (programming) acceptance testing - Formal testing conducted to determine whether a system satisfies its acceptance criteria and thus whether the customer should accept the system.  of the Spectrum Management System for Zimbabwe, for which TCI (Trustworthy Computing Initiative) An umbrella term from Microsoft for its efforts to improve security in Windows. TCI was announced in 2002 after viruses such as Code Red and Nimda had succeeded in attacking numerous Windows computers.  serves as prime contractor, was successfully completed on schedule last week.

The testing was conducted over a four-day period at the conclusion of a month-long visit from Zimbabwean engineers to TCI corporate headquarters in Sunnyvale. The Zimbabwean response was enthusiastic: "The system does what we need," declared the lead customer engineer, "we can't imagine anything else that we want."

Acceptance testing is an important milestone in the delivery of the system, which will be used nationwide for management of the electromagnetic spectrum electromagnetic spectrum

In January 1995, TCI (Technology for Communications International), a subsidiary of TCI International, Inc. with headquarters in Sunnyvale, was chosen as the preferred vendor. In August 1995, TCI was awarded the $4.9 million contract, which requires acceptance testing in January 1997.

Considerable preliminary testing preceded and facilitated final testing. Results from equipment vendors assured that specification performance is satisfied by computers, printers, receivers, tape recorders tape recorder, device for recording information on strips of plastic tape (usually polyester) that are coated with fine particles of a magnetic substance, usually an oxide of iron, cobalt, or chromium. The Zimbabwe Spectrum Management System provides for automatic frequency management and spectrum monitoring. The Frequency Management System consists of a main and secondary server, three workstations, two notebook computers A laptop computer that weighs in a range from five to seven pounds. The term originated when laptops were routinely more than 10 pounds, and those that became lighter were placed in a special "notebook" category. In practice, notebook computer and laptop computer are synonymous. , and software specially developed for frequency licensing, allocation, and compliance. The Monitoring System consists of one fixed station, with VLF-HF, VHF/UHF, and TV monitoring positions; two mobile stations housed in 4-wheel drive vehicles; direction finding (DF) systems; and two sets of portable test equipment. The contract also includes provision of an Equipment Type Approval Facility, EMC/EMI/RFI compliance systems, a comprehensive training program, and documentation.

The electromagnetic spectrum is increasingly viewed as a vital national resource in this Age of Information and ubiquitous communications. The Zimbabwe system is the first spectrum management system to be sold by TCI to an African nation. TCI is now also implementing a spectrum management system in Columbia, and its proposals for other systems are under consideration by several other nations.
