to cover skyrocketing gas prices - under a plan approved Wednesday by the City's Council's Transportation Committee.

The fare hike would be the third 10 percent increase since 2000. If approved by the City Council, it would take effect 30 days later.

The city's Department of Transportation says fuel, repairs, insurance and other costs of operating a taxi have increased 9 percent since the last fare hike in 2001.

The DOT recommends a hike that would be phased in over a year, with 4.2 percent during the first six months, followed by a 5.9 percent increase.

Fares would rise from $2 for the first tenth of a mile to $2.10 for the first seventh of a mile in the first six months, then to $2.20 for the first 11th of a mile for the following six months.

Additionally, a 50-cent surcharge could be added when the monthly average gas price per gallon gallon: see English units of measurement.  is $2.73 or greater - as it has been this week.
