The Santa Clarita Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will help people with basic tax returns, particularly those with low and limited incomes, individuals with disabilities, and non-English-speaking and elderly taxpayers.

``A lot of these people are spending money that isn't always very easy for them to find, and then they would make mistakes,'' said Lupe Lopez, director of the Santa Clarita Valley Service Center.

This program allows people to work with volunteers, who are supervised by tax experts, and help them save the $25 to $30 they would otherwise spend for someone else to fill out the 1040 or 1040EZ forms.

Volunteers will be trained for four weeks, pass a test and then begin preparing tax returns, Lopez said. Volunteers must commit to work for the service center for one year.

``It's bad enough to have a low income and then to pay the tax agencies,'' Lopez said.
