TARGET OPENS IN VAN NUYS.

Byline: Pam Park Staff Writer

VAN NUYS - Fedco is no more, but Target has opened a sparkling new Van Nuys store in its place.

The San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina
San Fernando (săn fərnăn`dō), city (1991 pop. 144,761), Buenos Aires prov., E Argentina. It is a district administrative center in the Greater Buenos Aires area.
Valley's newest Target, 14920 Raymer St., keeps some of the former Fedco's features and adds to them. The 132,000-square-foot store also goes further than previous Targets in ``targeting'' Latino and Jewish markets, executives said.

Minneapolis-based Target Stores bought four Fedco stores in the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  area about a year ago, after Fedco declared bankruptcy. ``We're making a more concerted effort to micromarket this store to meet the community's needs,'' said Mike McMullen, district supervisor for the Valley.

All the signage in the store appears in both English and Spanish and the food, clothing and entertainment merchandise was selected with the large Latino and Jewish communities in the area in mind, he said.

The children's books section, for example, has authentic Latino fables, and there is a greater assortment assortment /as·sort·ment/ (ah-sort´ment) the random distribution of nonhomologous chromosomes to daughter cells in metaphase of the first meiotic division.

and life celebrations such as christenings and comings-of-age.

``There is a much broader assortment than what Target has done in the past,'' McMullen said. ``There's a difference in just carrying some items and reaching out and trying to carry the full assortment.''

Spokeswoman Sandra Jaffa said most Target stores have a one-hour photo desk in addition to the regular store. The Van Nuys store keeps the pharmacy pharmacy, art of compounding and dispensing drugs and medication. The term is also applied to an establishment used for such purposes. Until modern times medication was prepared and dispensed by the physician himself. In the 18th cent.  department that was part of Fedco, plus an optical center and a portrait studio.

``None of the other Targets in the area have anything like that,'' Jaffa said. ``Fedco had a long-standing relationship with the community, and we want to maintain that.''

Target and other discounters such as Wal-Mart have been enjoying increasing sales and market share in the current competitive retail environment.
