You may not know much about what you'll see/hear/experience at TarFest 2007, but that's precisely the point of the 5-year-old Miracle Mile Miracle Mile can refer to the following places:
Spanning venues across the Miracle Mile -- including the La Brea Tar Pits La Brea Tar Pits Fossil field in Hancock Park (formerly Rancho La Brea), Los Angeles, Calif., U.S. It is the site of “pitch springs” oozing crude oil, formerly used by local Indians for waterproofing, and was explored by Gaspar de Portolá's expedition in -- TarFest offers a series of film, art, mixed media and music-related events, all by emerging area artists and all of it free. Presented by the Miracle Mile Players, TarFest kicks off this evening with its 6 p.m. opening reception at the Craft and Folk Art folk art, the art works of a culturally homogeneous people produced by artists without formal training. The forms of such works are generally developed into a tradition that is either cut off from or tenuously connected to the contemporary cultural mainstream. Museum. Anne Montone, Renee Stahl and Misty Odell will perform. TarFest's Art Program gets its airing Friday at the Korean Cultural Center and the Los Angeles Art Association/Gallery 825. Contemporary artworks curated by Michelle Urton are on view beginning at 6 p.m. The evening also features a performance by Tiffany Trenda. Short films screen throughout the day Friday at the Korean Cultural Center, at the A+D Museum and in The Engine, a mobile film-screening unit that uses a kinetic sculpture to position the screen. TarFest concludes Sunday with a series of educational and interactive activities spread across more than seven Miracle Mile venues. "Tongue & Groove" creator Conrad Romo presents short stories, spoken word, poetry and personal essays. Also Sunday, there will be food, drink and KCRW KCRW Kansas City Roller Warriors (women's roller derby league; Kansas City, Missouri) 89.9-provided live music from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the La Brea Tar Pits Park.
