TAPPI Introduction to Pulp and Paper Technology Short Course.

Course Overview. Delivering a broad overview of pulping and papermaking technology, the TAPPI Introduction to Pulp and Paper Technology Short Course offers the most comprehensive overview available of the entire pulping and papermaking process, from raw materials and wood preparation to pulp and paper mill operations. Specific course topics include secondary fibers, chemical recovery, stock preparation, and paper machine operations--including sheet forming, pressing, drying, calendering, coating, and paper properties. The course offers participants a unique opportunity to see how one part of a mill affects another and how the various raw materials and different pulping and papermaking processes can affect the properties of the paper that is being manufactured.

Learning Outcomes. After successfully completing this course, participants should be able to:

* Identify several examples of how one part of the mill affects another, and how the process affects paper and board properties

* Identify and label major processes and equipment involved in making pulp and paper; i.e., label a flow chart; list major operating variables

* Define basic papermaking terms and major differences between fibers, pulp types, additives, grades of paper and board, and important product properties

* List several current environmental concerns relating to pulp and paper production (i.e. air and water effluent issues in the pulp mill)

Course Faculty. Michael J. Kocurek, Ph.D., head of the Wood and Paper Science Department at North Carolina State University, has been teaching TAPPI's Introduction to Pulp and Paper Technology Short Course for more than 25 years.
