TAPPI 2002 Annual Business Meeting and Awards Ceremony.

TAPPI's 2002 Annual Business Meeting and Awards Ceremony will be held March 5, 2002, at 2:30 p.m. at the Georgia World Congress in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. This annual gathering of TAPPl members, leaders, Fellows, and honored guests provides a forum for TAPPI members to recognize those who have made unique contributions to TAPPI and to the industry. During the Annual Business Meeting and Awards Ceremony, the Association's highest honors--the Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal and the Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award--will be presented, and several new TAPPI Fellows will be recognized.

The TAPPI Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal Award is given to individuals who have made preeminent scientific and engineering achievements of proven commercial benefit to the world's pulp, paper, board, and forest products industries and the other industries that TAPPI serves. The 2002 TAPPI Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal will be awarded to Leroy H. (Pete) Busker; retired director of research and planning for Beloit Corp.'s Rockton, Illinois, Research and Development Center see page 42 for an interview with Busker.

The 2002 TAPPI Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award was established to recognize an individual for voluntary leadership and service that have significantly and demonstrably contributed to the advancement of the Association. Former TAPPI president Dale R. Dill, president of Dill Technologies, Webster Groves, Missouri, will receive the 2002 TAPPI Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award, see page 44 for an interview with Dill.

TAPPI Fellow is an honorary title bestowed upon less than 1% of TAPPI's membership and is given to individuals who have made extraordinary technical or service contributions to the industry and/or the Association. The 2002 TAPPI Fellows include:

In addition, the 200l TAPPI Best Research Paper Award will be awarded to K. Ono, H. Xu, C. Park, P. McKay, C. Aidun, and M. Yoda for an article entitled "Forming Jet Surface Velocity Profile Measurements with High Speed Digital Imaging" published in the March 2001 TAPPI JOURNAL.

TAPPI Announces new members of the Board of Directors

Charles F. Bogatie holds both bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry from Pittsburg State University in Kansas, and an MBA from Augusta College in Georgia. A TAPPI member since 1973, he is currently general manager for Smurfit-Stone Container in Hopewell, Virginia. He started his career in 1970 with Continental Can Company in Augusta as a management trainee. He has held positions in Smurfit-Stone as technical director at Hodge, Louisiana, operations manager at Panama City, Florida, and general manager at Port Wentworth, Georgia.

Bogatie is a member of the Water and Air Quality Committees of TAPPI's Environmental Division and of the Virginia-Carolina local section of TAPPI. He previously served on the Editorial Board of TAPPI Journal, and chaired the 1979 TAPPI Environmental Conference. He was active in both the Southeastern and Gulf Coast TAPPI Local Sections.

G. Ronald Brown is research director at MeadWestvaco Corporation's Alfred H. Nissan Technical Center in Laurel, Maryland.

He joined MeadWestvaco in 1975 after completing M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the Institute of Paper Chemistry, now the institute of Paper Science and Technology (IPST), and a B.S. degree in pulp and paper science and technology from North Carolina State University. He served on active duty as an officer/development engineer in the Air Force Packaging Evaluation Agency near Dayton, Ohio, between his graduate studies. In previous assignments with MeadWestvaco Corporation, he worked as process engineer on a linerboard machine in Charleston, South Carolina, research group leader in Laurel, Maryland, manager of electrical and instrumentation engineering in New York, New York, and technical assistant to the Corporate Research Director.

Brown has chaired AF&PA's Agenda 2020 Sensors and Controls Task Group since 1997. He organized and led the Process Automation sessions at the Forest, Wood, and Paper Industry Technology Summit in May, sponsored jointly by TAPPI and AF&PA. In 1996, he chaired the Process Control work group at TAPPI's Research Needs Conference in Raleigh, North Carolina, and has been a member of TAPPI's Process Control Committee. He is a member of the Miami University Paper Science and Engineering Foundation Board of Trustees and its Academic Committee. He serves on the Chemical Engineering Visiting Committee of Johns Hopkins University, the Sponsors Committee of the Paper Surface Science Program at the University of Maine, and the Papermaking Project Advisory Committee of the Institute of Paper Science and Technology. He joined TAPPI in 1970. In community activities, he recently completed service on the Columbia Foundation Board of Trustees and the Howard County, Maryland, United Way Community Partnership Board of Directors.

Peter F. Lee is the Vice President for Research and Development for International Paper in Tuxedo, New York. Before joining International Paper, Lee held research and technical positions for Mead Paper, Weyerhaeuser and IPST. He has more than 25 years of experience in our industry.

A graduate of Auckland University, he holds both bachelor's and doctoral degrees from that institution.

Lee joined TAPPI in 1977, and has served as chairman, vice-chairman, and secretary on the Fluids Mechanics Committee within the Engineering Division. In addition, Lee is the current TAPPI representative on the Wallenberg Prize Selection Committee, as well as serving on the Research Management Committee.

Lee has authored more than 25 publications and patents in the pulp, papermaking, and environmental areas.

Lewis D. Shackford is vice president of technology for GL&V Pulp Group, Inc. in Nashua, New Hampshire.

GL&V acquired Beloit Pulping in 2000, which included the former Ingersoll-Rand IMPCO Division, both organizations for which Shackford has worked. He holds a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts--Lowell (formerly Lowell Technological Institute), attended the Indiana University Executive Program in 1989 and 1990, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of New Hampshire.

Shackford joined TAPPI in 1975. His early involvement in TAPPI included being president of the Student Chapter of TAPPI at the university. Throughout his career, Shackford has been continuously active in TAPPI. He has served in all of the officers' positions in the Alkaline Pulping Committee of TAPPI's Pulp Manufacture Division, and has been on the Division Council and various subcommittees. He currently serves as chair of the Pulp Manufacture Division.

Shackford has chaired the Brown Stock Washing Short Course for many of fine last 22 years, since its first offering in 1979, and has served as an instructor at the Bleach Plant Operations Short Course on four occasions. More recently, he has been the technical program chair (1998-99) and the conference chair (2000-01) for the Pulping Conference. He is a recipient of the Pulp Manufacture Division Leadership and Service Award, and has been active in the Maine-New Hampshire, Southeast, and Gulf Coast Local Sections. In addition, Shackford has presented numerous technical papers at National and Local Section meetings in the fields of pulp cooking, washing, oxygen delignification, and bleaching technologies, and is an inventor on numerous U.S. and foreign patents.

Ronald A. Yeske is the President of the National Council for Air and Stream improvement NCASI) in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

Before joining NCASI in 1994, Yeske was Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Plateville. Previously, he served as Vice President-Research and Academic Affairs at IPST.

Yeske holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Marquette University and a doctorate in materials science from Northwestern University. He is a Registered Professional Engineer.

A TAPPI member since 1982, he has been active in the Environmental and Engineering Divisions. He has served as chairman, vice chairman, and secretary of the Research Management Committee. Yeske is a TAPPI Fellow. He has published more than 30 papers on engineering topics and has presented numerous technical papers at TAPPI conferences.
