TANNER NAMED PRESIDENT CARLSON TRAVEL GROUP

MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- One of the world's top and most experienced travel executives will rejoin Carlson Companies as president of its worldwide travel operation -- Carlson Travel Group -- which includes Carlson Travel Network.
Travis Tanner, 41, will become president, Carlson Travel Group, effective Feb. 1. He will report to Chuck Schmid, president and chief operating officer, Carlson Travel and Marketing Groups, who will continue to oversee the corporation's travel and marketing groups.
The announcement was made today by Curt Carlson, chairman and chief executive officer, Carlson Companies, parent company to the Carlson Travel Group.
Tanner currently serves as president, Walt Disney Travel Co.; executive vice president-resorts, Walt Disney World and senior vice president-sales, Walt Disney Attractions in Orlando, Fla. Tanner also will assume the duties, for now, of John Riener, president, Carlson Travel Network-Commercial, Carlson said. Riener resigned last month to take a position outside the travel industry.
In making the announcement, Carlson said, "We are pleased to have Travis Tanner rejoin our rapidly growing Carlson Travel operation which he helped develop for us in the 80s.
"As we prepare for the 21st century, I want to have our travel operation in both leisure and corporate travel be the largest and finest in the world. Travis Tanner -- who helped us lay the groundwork for our entrance into the travel market when we acquired the Ask Mr. Foster travel agencies in 1979 -- will help lead us to that objective," Carlson said.
"We are very pleased to have Travis Tanner join our executive team. His leadership will help us maximize our thrust to be the country's number one travel company," Schmid said.
Carlson acquired the Ask Mr. Foster travel agencies from Peter and John Ueberroth in 1979. John Ueberroth then became president of Carlson Travel Group which included Ask Mr. Foster Travel.
The Ask Mr. Foster travel name was changed to its current name, Carlson Travel Network, in February 1990 to give it a more inclusive image as an around-the-world operation.
Carlson Travel Network now numbers over 2,100 travel agencies around the world and does over $6 billion in annual systemwide revenues. It is one of the two largest travel management operations in the world.
Besides Carlson Travel Network, the Carlson Travel Group includes Carlson Travel Network International with locations in Western Europe and the Pacific Rim and also encompasses Carlson Travel Network and A.T. Later in 1987, he was named president, retail travel, Ask Mr. Foster. His responsibilities also included commercial travel and P. Lawson Travel in Canada. Tanner left Carlson Travel in January 1989 to become president, Walt Disney Travel Co.
Tanner started in the travel business loading luggage for Southern Airlines in 1972 where he mastered the customer and sales service side of the airline business. He eventually was placed in charge of station operations in a 14-city region for that airline.
Later he served as district sales manager and representative for Southern Airlines in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Miami and Birmingham, Ala. He also served as supervisor and in customer sales and service in Gulfport, Miss. (his hometown) and in Chicago.
In July 1979 Tanner joined Republic Airlines (now merged with Northwest) as director of sales administration and finally as General Sales Director before joining the Carlson Travel Group in 1984.
Tanner is a specialist in airline strategical and tactical marketing planning, automated sales systems and advertising and marketing. In his more than 20 years of experience, Tanner is acquainted with virtually every airline, rental car and hospitality executive in the world.
He completed his education at the University of Southern Mississippi and is a native of Gulfport. He and his wife, Rebecca, and their daughter, Jessica, 13, will move to the Minneapolis area in the next several months.
