TAMBRANDS ANNOUNCES MANUFACTURING RESTRUCTURING AND ONE-TIME CHARGE
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Tambrands Inc. (NYSE: TMB) today announced a program to restructure its worldwide manufacturing operations to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
Martin F. C. Emmett, chairman and chief executive officer, said, "The profitability of our Tampax tampon business can be enhanced by reducing our costs of producing tampons around the world. For Tambrands to be the low-cost producer of tampons worldwide, the configuration and operation of our manufacturing facilities must be as efficient as possible. The restructuring that we are announcing today is intended to achieve that goal."
In addition to restructuring its manufacturing, Tambrands plans to exit the sanitary pad and disposable diaper business in Brazil. The manufacturing restructuring and the revaluation of Tambrands' Brazilian investment will result in a one-time charge of approximately $23 million after tax in the fourth quarter of 1991.
Tambrands' program to restructure its manufacturing operations is based on a thorough analysis of worldwide production requirements and facilities. The one-time restructuring charge will include costs associated with workforce reductions and consolidation of facilities.
Emmett emphasized that the Tampax tampon business continues to be healthy in the United States and in international markets. "The restructuring of our manufacturing operations will help us deliver the results our shareholders expect; in particular, our targeted compound annual growth rate of more than 15 percent in net earnings during the first half of the nineties."
Tambrands said the fourth-quarter charge is subject to finalization. Tambrands plans to release its earnings for the fourth quarter and the full year 1991 in early February 1992.
Tambrands is a multinational manufacturer and marketer of personal care products, principally Tampax(R) tampons, which are sold in over 135 countries around the world.
