TALKING UP A TAX RAPPER HELPS SHERIFF LAUNCH HALF-CENT POLICE INITIATIVE.

UNIVERSAL CITY - Sheriff Lee Baca Leroy David Baca (b. May 27 1942, East Los Angeles, California) is the Sheriff of Los Angeles County, California.

After graduating from Benjamin Franklin High School (Los Angeles) in 1960, Baca worked his way through East Los Angeles College before starting with the L.A.
 launched his half-cent public-safety sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  initiative Tuesday with a Haitian-born rapper and an army of signature gatherers.

``We're in a crisis of a very large magnitude in this county when it comes to public safety,'' said Baca at a news conference at the former Hanna-Barbera studio building.

``No community should be left behind, and public safety should definitely not be left behind. ... I need your help in protecting you.''

Baca, whose force is down 1,100 deputies and whose budget has been slashed $166 million in two years, said jails are closing and prisoners are serving only 10 percent of their required sentences.

If approved, the sales tax boost would generate $500 million a year - one-third for the Sheriff's Department, one-third for the Los Angeles Police Department "LAPD" and "L.A.P.D." redirect here. For other uses, see LAPD (disambiguation).

Sheriff's stations would receive $1.5 million in Agoura Hills, $1.4 million in Calabasas, $87,000 in Hidden Hills, $1.4 million in La Canada- Flintridge, $6 million in Lancaster, $6 million in Palmdale and $880,000 in Westlake Village.

The sales tax initiative campaign is co-chaired by Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  members Antonio Villaraigosa, Eric Garcetti and Janice Hahn, with support from Mayor James Hahn.
