TALKIN' RADIO : `MUSIC OF YOUR LIFE' FORMAT BOOSTS KGIL-AM.

Byline: Fred Shuster

Whoever said music is ailing on the AM dial surely hasn't heard KGIL-AM (1260), whose syndicated ``Music of Your Life'' format is winning fans across the country.

The format - generically known as adult pop standards - features such core artists as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett

For other people named Tony Bennett, see Tony Bennett (disambiguation).

``An hour will not go by without hearing one of our core artists if not all five,'' promises Chuck Southcott, KGIL's programmer and afternoon host.

In the winter Arbitron survey, KGIL appeared for the first time in almost three years. Even though ``Music of Your Life'' did not become KGIL's format until March 2, the strength of its ratings for that single month was enough to put the station into the survey for the entire three-month period.

``It's really the essence of the old KMPC and KGIL formats,'' Southcott explained. ``We've kept that tradition alive and brought it into a new era on a national basis.''

The format has 111 affiliates with stations in seven out of the nation's 10 major radio markets.

Thanks to today's technology, many of the station's disc jockeys work out of their homes. Southcott, for example, tapes his show at his Granada Hills home studio, then overnights the digital audiotape Noun 1. digital audiotape - a digital tape recording of sound

Joining Southcott on KGIL's airwaves are such veteran broadcasters as Gary Owens and Wink Martindale. In addition, entertainers Patti Page and Pat Boone both host weekend shows.

Ease on down the road

Talk outlet KRLA-AM (1110) breaks new ground this weekend when the curtain goes up on what's billed as the first radio program devoted to Los Angeles driving and drivers.

The three-hour ``Traffic Jam,'' co-hosted by Kenny Morse and Reed Berry, will focus on such topics as road rage, how to fight a ticket, teen and elderly drivers, buying a car and road safety.

The show airs at 10 a.m. Saturdays.
