``The festival is going to show people that the arts can be alive in our community and Old Town Newhall can be the heartbeat of culture,'' REP co-artistic director Michael Owston said.

Tim Ben Boydston, artistic director of the theater guild, joined Owston in his sentiment.

``We're very excited to welcome the visual artists to downtown,'' Boydston said. ``It's going to be a great event for families to come, there will be things for the kids to do and it's really exciting to see the arts community blossoming here in the arts district.''

Members of the Santa Clarita Valley Artists' Association will create 20 plein art pieces that will be auctioned to benefit their new gallery on San Fernando Road, which will be open for special hours during the festival.

Another aspect of the festival will be the fourth annual Newhall ArtWalk, in which businesses invite artists to use materials found in their establishments to create unique works of art that will be on display through Oct. 31.
