Larson tied for 18th with a three-round total of 230 at the regional, where he had a single-round best of 74. He also finished 18th in the Masters College tournament at Robinson Ranch and was second in Notre Dame's own tournament. His success does not come as a surprise to Moorpark coach Will Thurston, who welcomed Larson to his tryout tournament when the former Newbury Park High golfer asked to join the Raiders following a season at College of the Desert. ``I have my recruited team and my tryout team,'' Thurston said. ``He came to me and said he thought he could play. I said, 'Fine, just finish in the top two in the tryout tournament.' ``He shot 74-75-73 and won the tournament by 20 shots. He was really happy to be a part of the team and he wound up our No. 3 scorer that year behind Chris Pederson and Kurt Taylor.'' --SCGA Amateur: Former Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. Thurston has added that award to his Moorpark College program, and incoming freshman Aaron Conrad of Thousand Oaks High might be the early top contender for the Raiders' Oil Can Award. Conrad, who helped Thousand Oaks reach its first Southern Section final in at least 15 years this season, was intending to play next season at Moorpark, along with long-hitting teammate Bryan Martin. But Kyle Thurston, son of the Moorpark coach and Thousand Oaks' two-time Marmonte League champion, was planning just to work on his game as a non-playing student at Moorpark. The more Conrad thought about it, the more he was convinced Moorpark could have an outstanding season if young Thurston - who had five rounds in the 60s this season - could be convinced to play. Conrad convinced his friend, and Moorpark now is expected to wage a strong challenge for its first Western State Conference title.
