``I think exploring our area used to happen a lot more in Southern California,'' said Howser, sitting in his office at KCET in Hollywood. ``People used to go out with their families for a Sunday drive. The whole beauty of our part of the country is that there are great places all around us, within a couple of hours, for a day trip. We should slow down and smell the roses more.'' After stopping at the California Welcome Center in Barstow to inquire about notable sights, Howser dropped in on the historic El Rancho Motel, the world's first Del Taco, the rebuilt Calico Ghost Town and the Calico Early Man Archeological Site, among other things. ``We had a few ideas ahead of time of things we wanted to see, but, for the most part, it was totally unscripted un·script·ed adj. The next installment, in March, will see Howser exploring the area around the Ventura County town of Fillmore. The places he'll visit in further episodes, Howser said, have yet to be determined. Howser and crew are looking at the entire swath of the Golden State south of Fresno and north of the Mexican border for inspiration. ``In a way, we're really doing this by the seat of our pants,'' Howser said. ``We hope we can dispel people's notion that there's nothing out there on some of these stretches of highway, get them to slow down, get off the road and look around. We want to show them that even something as supposedly desolate and uninviting as the stretch of highway from Barstow to Vegas can be a rich experience.''
