Byline: Dereck Andrade Staff Writer

Since becoming part of Southern California's landscape in 1967, the RMS Queen Mary RMS Queen Mary is an ocean liner that sailed the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967 for Cunard Line (then Cunard White Star Line). The renovated ship is a 365-room resort hotel, its romantic first-class- only staterooms splendidly adorned in classic Art Deco style, with original artwork, rich wood paneling and portholes that provide panoramic views of the Long Beach coastline. The rooms are on three of the ship's decks.

Staterooms without views start at $109 a night, with deluxe staterooms with views costing between $129 and $219 per night. And if you want to live like royalty, you're going to have to spend like royalty. The Royalty Suites - eight in all, named after British royalty - will set you back a cool $500 a night.

There are always specials, so it's best to call ahead or check online to get the most updated rates.

A stay aboard the Queen Mary is a step back into history, when the world seemed more refined, respectable and sophisticated, where first-class service was not only expected, it was provided with dignity.

The Queen Mary's famous Observation Bar located near the bow is the ticket for those looking to enjoy a beer or cocktail. Staffed by friendly bartenders and courteous servers, it was once the ship's first-class lounge and provides some of the best examples of Art Deco architecture This is a list of buildings that are examples of Art Deco. There are also three award-winning restaurants on board: the Chelsea, Promenade and Sir Winston's. The latter offers a more formal fine-dining experience.

With its pristine views of the downtown Long Beach skyline as city lights twinkle off Queensway Bay, dinner for two with drinks at Sir Winston's can easily top $200. But it's money well spent that adds to the classic ambience of a stay aboard the Queen Mary.

Now that the Queen Mary is aggressively competing for tourist dollars in a weak U.S. economy, there's some good news for Southern California consumers looking for Looking for

For those looking for a day trip aboard the ship, the best value remains the Adventure Passport, which costs $30 for adults, $28 for seniors and military, $18 for children 3 to 11.

It includes a self-guided tour, the Ghosts and Legends Tour, a campy one-hour excursion in the bow of the ship. The tour covers many of the luxury liner's ghost stories, including the ship's famed haunted indoor pool. It also includes admission to tour the Russian Scorpion submarine.
