Founded (1892) in California by a group led by the Scottish-American conservationist John Muir, the Sierra Club  hiking leader, a person deemed experienced, knowledgeable and capable of leading hikes into the often wild terrain encountered on local exertions.

``I used to hike 10 miles,'' said the 83-year-old Willis, explaining why he ``only'' hikes six or seven miles these days.
