TAKE 5 : PARTY LINES ELEGANTLY MARCHING TO THE CAUSE.

Byline: Barbara De Witt De Witt, uninc. town (1990 pop. 8,244), Onondaga co., central N.Y., a residential suburb of Syracuse.

Talk about the height of elegance. From the long line of limos to the harp and violin soloists, the March of Dimes' 14th annual Premiere Parents Awards gala was a class act.

Adding to the glamorous ambience were past honorees Terry and Carol York, who had everyone watching and wondering who the occupants were as they arrived in an awesome Rolls-Royce stretch limo. As they stepped out in their black tie-best, they announced that the limo would be auctioned for a night on the town (which later sold for $300).

Held Thursday night at the Sheraton Universal Hotel, where 500 guests dined on grilled shrimp, chicken roulade rou·lade

In a ``This Is Your Life'' video presentation, the Cooks and Boeckmanns were described as humanitarians, philanthropists and devoted parents, and were applauded by friends and family.

``The best thing is we had to go to the children and ask them if we deserved the honor,'' said Bert Boeckmann, a native Californian and owner of Galpin Ford, as he accepted the award.

Jane Boeckmann, president of World Communications Inc. and publisher and editor in chief of Valley Magazine, lists the March of Dimes as one of her favorite charities. ``Their mission, which is to improve the health of babies, is a special one to me,'' she said.

The pre-dinner party included free-flowing champagne and finger food from Wolfgang Puck's new restaurant Oba-Chine, followed by a runway show featuring the all-red creations of 30 designers, from Donna Karan to Cynthia Rowley. The ensembles were part of a traveling fashion tour that ended in Los Angeles.

DIFFA/Los Angeles board member Richard Valenza of North Hollywood, who organized the event, was thrilled with the turnout. ``We don't have the exact figures yet, but we've raised enough money to give $10,000 grants to the Los Angeles Free Clinic, Project New Hope, the Safe Place for Pediatric AIDS pediatric AIDS AIDS acquired HIV perinatally or by 'vertical'–maternal-infant transmission; children with PAIDS may become symptomatic–lymphoid interstitial pneumonia, encephalopathy, recurrent bacterial infection, Candida , Tuesday's Child and Westside Women's Health Women's Health Definition

At the City of Hope gala organized by the apparel industry held May 10 at the Regent Wilshire Hotel, BCBG BCBG Bon Chic Bon Genre  designer Max Azria was the star. He already has numerous fashion design awards, but this time he was honored with City of Hope's highest honor for philanthropists, the Spirit of Life Award.

Before the party officially started, Azria already was basking in the glow. Surrounded by his wife, Lubov, son, Michael, and daughters Chole, Joyce and Marie, he said it was an incredible honor, as he'd never won anything for just being himself.

Later, up at the podium, after we'd devoured the ravioli, steak, salmon with pecan crust, creme brulee, and cookies - and after we'd given the West Coast premiere of his fall '97 collection a standing ovation - he repeated how grateful he was for the honor. Choked with emotion, Azria reminded us that America is still the land of opportunity, and that we need to keep the spirit of helping others alive.

Then he started hugging and kissing everyone in sight. And there were hundreds.

The benefit gala, organized by Gil Schwartzberg, raised $500,000 for the treatment of cancer, diabetes and AIDS at the City of Hope Medical Center in Los Angeles.

It began with a silent auction of incredible gifts, like a weekend in a French chateau, a car and a mink coat, followed by dinner and a dessert emcee Garry Marshall of Toluca Lake described as ``trail mix topped with apples and chocolate sauce.'' There were a lot of laughs that night, especially from ``Bird Cage'' star Nathan Lane, who teased honoree Neil Simon about having so many tribute dinners made for him. According to event co-chair Roberta Morgen of Encino, the event raised $55,000 for senior citizen organizations. Major sponsors were Kaiser Permanente Senior Advantage, Western Bagel, and the Daily News.

Dionne Warwick wasn't surprised when her name was called as the recipient for the Jeffrey Foundation's Special Friend Award - she'd gotten the news ahead of time - but she was surprised when Burt Bacharach showed up to give it to her. Sybil Brand was at the Regent Beverly Wilshire fete, too, celebrating her 95th birthday with a standing ovation for her longtime support of the foundation's services for disabled children.

Helping one group realize their dream of building a heritage center, more than 300 people raised $25,000 May 4 at the 26th anniversary of the San Fernando Valley Chinese Cultural Association banquet at Knollwood Country Club in Granada Hills.

The association's president Jack Chen said he was pleased by the turnout and support for the Valley's Chinese community. ``People came who were really interested - not just our members, but others who wanted to help,'' said Chen.

For the past year, the Northridge-based association has been trying to raise money - it needs $500,000 - to start building a Chinese heritage center that would offer classes to the public, including those in language and arts, for youth and adults. The center also would include a full Chinese library and office space.

The night's events included a keynote speech from California Supreme Court Justice Ming Chin, as well as musical entertainment ranging from traditional Chinese folk songs to classical works.
