TAKE 5: PARTY LINES : SUMMERTIME, AND THE GALAS ARE SPIRITED.

Byline: Barbara De Witt Daily News Fashion Editor

It's summer, traditionally a quiet time on the society beat, but both the Aria! Opera Ball and American Cancer Society's Cal Spirit XIII galas this past week were major successes.

According to Mark Anchor Albert, who founded and serves as chairman for Aria!, ``I am thrilled to see so many peers here tonight and witness their enthusiasm for this fabulous art form.'' Albert is talking, of course, about the new L.A. Opera support group for young professionals and the $25,000 raised at the ball for opera programs. The event was held July 12 at the Dennis Tito estate in Pacific Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m).  and included entertainment by soprano Shana Blake Hill, mezzo mez·zo

Speaking of good food, chef superstar Julia Child was honored July 13 at a big garden party on the lush grounds of Ron Burkle's Green Acres Estate in Beverly Hills. The party, attended by 900, was the American Cancer Society's 13th annual California Spirit gourmet-dining extravaganza which raised $460,000 for the society's lifesaving and education programs.

Event hosts were Wolfgang Puck, Barbara Lazaroff and Sherry Lansing, and chairmen were Susan Leider and Murray Sommer Sommer is a surname, from the German and Danish word for the season "summer".

. Chefs for the evening included Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken of Border Grill; Nancy Silverton and Mark Peel of Campanile campanile (kămpənē`lē, Ital. kämpänē`lā), Italian form of bell tower, constructed chiefly during the Middle Ages. ; Makoto Tanaka of Chinois on Main; and Joachim Splichal of Patina, Pinot Bistro and Cafe Pinot restaurants.

Sponsors for the fund-raiser included the Fran & Ray Stark Foundation, Macy's, Nissan Motor Corp., Mercedes-Benz and Paramount Pictures.

Bastille Day was the cause for celebration on the rooftop of the swank Chanel boutique on Rodeo Drive Tuesday night. While guests sipped champagne and nibbled pate in an array of Chanel ensembles, models paraded in Karl Lagerfeld's fall collection for Chanel. Fashion friends, take note: The famous double C logo was hardly visible (logo-mania is over), but what I saw plenty of was tailored sweater-and-pantsuit ensembles accented with big gutsy pieces of jewelry. There were the classic Chanel boucle bou·clé or bou·cle

The collection also included sewn-down pleats, long wool crepe crepe (krāp), thin fabric of crinkled texture, woven originally in silk but now available in all major fibers.
