TAFT TOPS UNIVERSITY IN FOUR GAMES TOREADORS LOSE A GAME, BUT ARE ABLE TO PREVAIL, ADVANCE TO CITY SEMIFINAL MATCH AGAINST PALISADES.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

A bench-clearing celebration followed the third game of Wednesday night's match between Taft of Woodland Hills and University of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  girls' volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. Taking even one game against Taft these days can have that effect on opponents.

The second-seeded Toreadors, who hadn't lost a game through the first two rounds of playoffs, rebounded from their game-three loss in the City quarterfinal quar·ter·fi·nal

to defeat visiting University 25-13, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19. But Taft, which went undefeated en route to a West Valley League title, was reminded that if the Toreadors are to win their first City championship, it won't come easy.

``The bottom line is we're moving on,'' said Taft coach Arman Mercado For the hispanic surname "Mercado", please see de Mercado.

Mercado first originated in Spain. In English it means 'market'.

, who admitted there were moments his team had him worried.

The Toreadors (29-7) displayed far less emotion upon clinching the victory that advances them to Tuesday's semifinal against Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m).  than No. 7 University (10-6) had when it temporarily staved off elimination with the game-three win. Playing for a City title, after all, is something Taft has been aiming for all season, and hadn't had much reason to believe it wouldn't get that chance.

University was a threat in each game Wednesday. University led as late as 20-19 in the second game, then in game three took the lead for good at 17-16. Taft was up just 17-16 in the fourth game before pulling away with six of the next seven points.

``We're not designed for a team like that,'' Mercado said. ``We're a blocking team. ...They shoot the ball all over the place and were passing well. And we weren't passing well.''
