T2 terminal shuts after 316m fliers; HEATHROW.PASSENGERS will fly into Heathrow's Terminal 2 for the last time today as it closes after processing 316 million check-ins in 54 years.The once glamorous Europa Building, opened by the Queen in 1955, will be bulldozed for a futuristic pounds 1billion terminus at the world's busiest hub. The late architect Frederick Gibberd Sir Frederick Ernest Gibberd (b. 1908 in Coventry, Warwickshire - d. 1984) was an English architect and landscape designer. A good friend of Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe, Gibberd's work was influenced by Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and F.R.S. Yorke. designed it to accommodate 1.2 million fliers a year but 8 million now file through. Air France passengers from Paris touch down at T2 today. Work will begin next year on the new terminal which is due to become home to the Star Alliance airlines in 2014. BAA chief executive Colin Matthews said: "This marks an important moment in the modernisation of Heathrow." |
