``No one knows how tough our league is until someone sees us,'' said Simi Valley coach Suzanne Manlet, whose team defeated Mater Dei, the No. 4 seed and defending division champion, earlier this season.

``We really shouldn't have to be seeing Thousand Oaks this early.''

Thousand Oaks coach Gary Walin agreed.

``Simi Valley is far better than a second-round team,'' he said.

Notre Dame-bound senior pitcher Jennifer Sharron (21-3), who hurled a perfect game in the first round, quickly made her presence known offensively.

Sharron then took out shortstop Tracie Hall with a hard slide at second base on an attempted double play. The play allowed two runs to score on what was scored a fielder's choice.

The 4-0 lead was plenty for Sharron, who struck out nine and allowed only four hits.

Sharron's artistry has not been limited to the diamond. Prior to the playoffs she created a chart labeled the ``Road to the Ring,'' a five-step ladder detailing what Thousand Oaks must accomplish to capture the division title.

The chart, which hangs in the Lancers' dugout, also serves as a reminder not to overlook any opponent.

``If you skip one step,'' she said, ``you trip.''

Right fielder Jennifer Richards collected two hits for the second straight playoff game and Arizona-bound first baseman Erika Hanson contributed two hits and a defensive stab that saved two runs in the fifth inning. Tande had two hits for the Pioneers (21-8).
