Sarasota finally has a T.J. Maxx of its own, and it's about time. I've been pushing it to the Maxx in Gainesville and Brandon until now. It will be a lot more convenient to breeze into the 24,000-square-foot store on Tuttle near the corner of Bee Ridge Road. It's in the building that used to be Zayre's. T.J. Maxx is an off-price chain with items arranged somewhat like a British village's jumble sale. You can find savings here of 20 to 60 percent on brand-name and designer labels. The inventory varies with each shipment, but you can usually find delectable purchases on housewares, gift items, linens, men's, women's and children's clothes, women's shoes, fine jewelry and fashion accessories. The best buys I've ever made on haute designer sheets and tablecloths were at the Maxx. The company is headquartered in Framingham, Mass., and is owned by the same corporation that has the Chadwick of Boston catalog and the Hit or Miss chain of women's clothing stores. There are currently 400 T.J. Maxx stores in 40 states, which gives me a feeling of security when I travel.
