Systran Corp. announces COMM232 IP Module.

DAYTON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 21, 1997--Systran Corp., developer of I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

I/O - Input/Output
Solutions (a suite of IP Modules) and the SCRAMNet real-time computer communications network, today announced the addition of an industry-standard RS-232 IP Module to their I/O Solutions product line.

The COMM232 is a single-wide, RS-232 serial communications IP Module which measures 1.8" X 3.9" in size and contains four independent serial ports. It provides the ideal solution for applications where multiple RS232 ports are required in minimal space. When used with Systran's five-slot VMESC5 carrier, the COMM232 can provide 20 serial ports from a single VME (Virtual Machine Environment) An operating system from Fujitsu Services (formerly ICL) that runs on its Series 39 mainframes. Introduced in 1975, VME is a comprehensive product that provides a variety of utilities for datacenter operations. 6U slot. Up to 24 serial ports can be located in a single ISA (1) (Instruction Set Architecture) See instruction set.

(2) (Interactive Services Association) See Internet Alliance.

(3) (Internet Security and Acceleration) See .NET.

The COMM232 offers full modem support with all hardware handshaking signals present, and its automatic external power supply selection feature and low power CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Pronounced "c-moss." The most widely used integrated circuit design. It is found in almost every electronic product from handheld devices to mainframes.  receivers and drivers allow users to conserve IP bus power.

Some additional features of the COMM232 include: -- Industry standard 16550 UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter) The electronic circuit that makes up the serial port. Also known as "universal serial asynchronous receiver transmitter" (USART), it converts parallel bytes from the CPU into serial bits for transmission, and vice  equivalent ports -- 16 byte transmit and receive FIFO (First In First Out) A storage method that retrieves the item stored for the longest time. Contrast with LIFO. See traffic engineering methods.

per port -- Prioritization of interrupts (by port) in software -- Sustained I/O transfer, read/write rate of 2.7 MTransfers/second -- 8 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  operation with one wait state on all transfers

"The COMM232 is another product that addresses the total solution requirements of Systran's I/O customers," said Steve Guentner, I/O Solutions Product Marketing Specialist. "The COMM232 is the first in a series of Serial Communications IP modules which will complement Systran's existing I/O Solutions product line," he noted.

Systran's I/O Solutions include carriers, analog interfaces, digital/discrete interfaces, counter/timers, IP module bus extender toolkits, software support packages, and accessories. These modular I/O devices enable designers to specify and implement solutions with more flexibility than traditional host-based I/O boards. Their small form-factor and generic features make them useful for applications such as data acquisition, simulation, instrumentation, and process control.
