This book comes from teaching introductory, intermediate and advanced level courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Much of the structure and content reflects support material for courses that establish the theoretical aspects of database systems, underpin practical workshops or initiate advanced, research-oriented studies.

I have included coverage of all of the central and optional database topics likely to arise during the whole of a student's undergraduate career. The material is also suitable to support students following an MSc conversion programme.

The book is divided into four parts. Part 1, Getting Started, offers introductory material on the development of data storage techniques, data models and databases. It also sets out the background for the Liga Utopia case study that provides most of the practical examples in the succeeding text.

The second part, Database Systems, contains course material for a course in database theory, typically taken as part of the second year of study for an undergraduate programme or as a major element of a conversion MSc. The volume of material in this section is aimed at a full unit within such a modular programme. Sample teaching plans, lecture slides, tutorial questions and coursework assignments are available on the support web site.

Implementing the System, the third part, deals with practical issues. This offers a guide to the problems and solutions associated with the implementation of the Liga Utopia case study. This can be used to support group workshop tasks. It also offers insights for individual project work.

The final part, Advanced Database Issues, reviews several topics of current research interest and delves Delves is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated a short distance to the south of Consett.  deeper into some of the material treated in Part 2. Its aim is to introduce these areas of study in order to facilitate a research-based unit at final year level. Each chapter finishes with suggestions for project-based work in these areas.

A bibliography has been included at the back of the book. These references deal with basic concepts and the reader will see that they date from the period where this material represented the leading edge of database research. Only references to original and seminal papers are included for several reasons.

In the majority of cases, they express fundamental principles in clear descriptive prose without recourse A phrase used by an endorser (a signer other than the original maker) of a negotiable instrument (for example, a check or promissory note) to mean that if payment of the instrument is refused, the endorser will not be responsible.  to complex mathematical and logic symbology sym·bol·o·gy

They also provide a clear portal, through citation, into subsequent publications. This enables tracking of both theoretical and practical developments.

They will obtain fresh references reflecting modern research trends beyond the publication date of this book.

The practical examples and case studies in the text are based on Oracle 9i(2). Many UK Universities use this database in their teaching programmes. My own University makes the CD installation available for students. The CDs are also available from the Oracle Technology Network or are downloadable zip files (1) A file that contains one or more files that have been compressed into the ZIP format.
