He was the first non-Italian pope elected since the Dutch Adrian VI (1522–23) and the first Polish and Slavic pope.  on November 20, in the context of their Jubilee pilgrimage to Rome.

In this way, pilgrims of the Syro-Malankar Catholic Church of India and other places hoped to express this Christian community's closeness to Peter's successor. The gesture was significant, as this Church had once severed its relations with Rome.

The pilgrims were accompanied by Metropolitan Archbishop Cyril Baselios Makancharuvil of Trivandrum.

The Syro-Malankar Catholic Church is the "Church of St. Thomas," as it began with the apostle's preaching. There are four religious congregations in this Church, which is rooted in India: the Order of the Imitation of Christ Bethany Ashram, also called the Order of the Imitation of Christ (O.I.C.), was founded by Fr. P. T. Geevarghese Panickaruveettil O.I.C. The Syro-Malankar Church, of the Antioch rite, regained full communion Full communion is a term used in Christian ecclesiology to describe relations between two distinct Christian communities or Churches that, while maintaining some separateness of identity, recognise each other as sharing the same communion and the same essential doctrines.  with Rome in 1930. It retains its special liturgy in the local tongue, Malayalam.

The Pope stressed the importance of the anniversary of this Christian community's return to communion with the See of Peter and the universal Church, saying: "Seventy years ago, Metropolitan Archbishop Mar Ivanikos, Bishop Mar Theophilos, and their companions entered into full communion with the See of Peter, because they were profoundly convinced of the truth of the words found beneath the dome of the Vatican Basilica basilica (bəsĭl`ĭkə), large building erected by the Romans for transacting business and disposing of legal matters. Rectangular in form with a roofed hall, the building usually contained an interior colonnade, with an apse at one end : 'Hinc una fides mundo refulget.' 'From here the one faith shines forth to the world.'

"They understood that 'the Church is one, the Church of Christ between East and West'; and they knew that, in entering the communion of the Catholic Church, they 'did not at all intend to deny their fidelity to their own traditions."'

The Pope asked the Syro-Malankar Catholics "to invoke God's love on the Christians of the Oriental Churches, that in new and deeper ways they may 'discover the fact that they are all walking together toward the one Lord, and thus toward each other.'"
