Syphilis, HIV link in doubt.

Many health care professionals have argued that a recent spike in syphilis syphilis (sĭf`əlĭs), contagious sexually transmitted disease caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum (described by Fritz Schaudinn and Erich Hoffmann in 1905).  is the result of increasing unsafe sex, particularly among gay and bisexual men, and that a rise in HIV HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), either of two closely related retroviruses that invade T-helper lymphocytes and are responsible for AIDS. There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS in the United States.  infections would soon follow. But a study published in January in the journal Nature argues that spikes in syphilis are more likely due to a natural eight- to 11-year cycle for the disease rather than an increase in unsafe sex.

The results were encouraging to health care professionals who have worried that increasing syphilis infections are a sign that people at risk for HIV have become complacent about practicing safe sex. But John Douglas John Douglas is a name shared by a number of notable individuals:
  • John Douglas, Lord of Balvenie (d. 1463), Scottish soldier
  • John Douglas, 2nd Earl of Morton (d.
, MD, of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), agency of the U.S. Public Health Service since 1973, with headquarters in Atlanta; it was established in 1946 as the Communicable Disease Center.  worried that the study itself could cause complacency. "It is important for people to realize that sexual risk behavior is the critical factor in determining risk of syphilis and other STDs," he said.
