Syntax Announces New Levels of NOS Interoperability with TotalNET Advanced Server v5.2.

FEDERAL WAY, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 1997--

TotalNET Advanced Server software v5.2 will deliver industry-leading

features for easy integration of networks with different client

desktops and server operating systems.

Syntax Inc. announces an upcoming release of a major upgrade to its flagship networking software solution, TotalNET Advanced Server (TAS TAS

TAS is network operating system An operating system that is designed for network use. Normally, it is a complete operating system with file, task and job management; however, with some earlier products, it was a separate component that ran under the OS; for example, LAN Server required OS/2, and LANtastic required DOS.  software that allows a UNIX server to act as a file, print and application server to a variety of client PCs in a heterogeneous, networked environment. TAS is delivered as an Intranet server, enabling a network administrator to quickly install and configure TAS using a standard HTML-based graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

known as TotalAdmin. Using this web-based technology, different UNIX systems look exactly alike to the network administrator.

TAS v5.2 offers new features and benefits, resulting in a leading solution for transparent PC to UNIX connectivity. Among its new features are significant improvements to the GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface.  administration tool TotalAdmin. Previously, TotalAdmin worked sequentially, forcing users to access menus in a specific order. With the new advancements, TotalAdmin utilizes frames and Java technology to provide quick access to any point within TotalAdmin, allowing users to access menus in any order via hypertext links.

"TAS 5.2 represents a significant advancement in intranet enabled LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  integration technology," said Roger Franklin, Syntax President. "This product's administrative interface has been transformed from a pure HTML HTML

GUI to an advanced and extendible Java framework." TotalAdmin 5.2 offers distributed administration along with special human engineering features to improve network and system administrator productivity. This new technology base will allow us to build and "snap in" exciting system administration tools aimed at further reducing our customer's administrative burdens."

This new TotalAdmin also facilitates the optional installation of modules or "spheres" which further enhances TAS functionality. Password synchronization, virus scanning and UNIX system administration are all planned for the near future.

Another significant improvement made to TotalAdmin is its ability to administer all TAS servers in the enterprise with a single login. Within TotalAdmin, an icon at the top of the screen identifies the name of the server currently being accessed. By clicking on this icon, the user is able to see hypertext links to other TAS servers. Previously, administrators were forced to log in to each server separately.

TAS v5.2 also provides advancements to unified mapping of file names across services for Macintosh, NetWare, SMB (1) (Small to Medium-sized Business) Also called "SME" (small to medium-sized enterprise), it refers to companies that are larger than the small office/home office (SOHO), but not huge.  (Windows 3.x, 95, NT and OS/2), and UNIX. From the client's point of view, TAS will now map files with pure case insensitivity and case preservation. The default behavior will be modified to no longer keep the UNIX filenames in a lower-case form.

Additional TAS v5.2 features include: performance tuning, modifications to device drivers, enhance network utilities, enhanced tracing, and support for outbound Macintosh printer (PAP) connections.
