Synplicity and Lattice Semiconductor sign OEM agreement for Synplify; Companies Lead Trend of EDA Vendor and Silicon Supplier Collaborating for Customer's Design Success.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 1997--Synplicity(R), Inc., a leading supplier of logic synthesis The conversion of a high-level electronic circuit description into a list of logic gates and their interconnections, called the "netlist." Every logic synthesis program understands some subset of Verilog and VHDL.  software for programmable logic See PLD.  design, and Lattice Semiconductor, the leading supplier of in-system programmable Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLDs), have joined in an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and ) agreement whereby Synplicity will supply Lattice with a version of its logic synthesis software, Synplify(R). The Lattice version, called the ispHDL(TM) System for Synplicity, supports all Lattice ISP (1) See in-system programmable.

(2) (Internet Service Provider) An organization that provides access to the Internet. Connection to the user is provided via dial-up, ISDN, cable, DSL and T1/T3 lines.
(TM) CPLD (Complex PLD) A programmable logic device that is made up of several simple PLDs (SPLDs) with a programmable switching matrix in between the logic blocks. CPLDs typically use EEPROM, flash memory or SRAM to hold the logic design interconnections. See PLD and SPLD.  families and will be sold and supported by Lattice.

"PLD (Programmable Logic Device) Refers to a variety of logic chips that are programmable at the customer's site, the customer being the vendor of the finished chip, not the end user.  designers today are faced with rapidly increasing capacity in our ispLSI(R) CPLDs, a challenge which calls for a synthesis-based design flow to ensure customer success," stated Steven Laub, chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

The officer of a firm responsible for day-to-day management, usually the president or an executive vice-president.
of Lattice. "This OEM agreement with Synplicity allows Lattice to offer our customers a Verilog-HDL and VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) A hardware description language (HDL) used to design electronic systems at the component, board and system level. VHDL allows models to be developed at a very high level of abstraction.  synthesis tool that provides high-quality results, is easy to use, and works seamlessly with Lattice's synthesis-optimized ispDS+(TM) fitter and ispHDL design environment."

"We believe we're ushering in a trend of EDA (1) (Electronic Design Automation) Using the computer to design, lay out, verify and simulate the performance of electronic circuits on a chip or printed circuit board.  and silicon companies working together to help their customers achieve first-pass design success," said Ken McElvain, chief executive officer and chief technology officer, Synplicity. "We are happy to partner with Lattice, a key player in the PLD market and the inventor of in-system programmable technology."

Lattice's ISP development system, named ispDS+, will be fully integrated with Synplify, ensuring customers an efficient, tightly coupled environment. Additionally, customers can be assured of timely support for all new Lattice CPLD devices.

Synplify for Lattice will be distributed through Lattice's worldwide distribution network, including direct sales force and U.S. distributors Arrow, Hamilton Hallmark, Insight and Marshall.

About Synplify

Synplicity's Synplify synthesis tool accepts industry-standard Verilog and VHDL descriptions and produces optimized implementations for programmable devices from many leading vendors. The recent addition of its Finite State Machine See state machine.

(mathematics, algorithm, theory) Finite State Machine - (FSM or "Finite State Automaton", "transducer") An abstract machine consisting of a set of states (including the initial state), a set of input events, a set of output events, and a state transition

) compiler makes it the first logic synthesis tool to provide fully automatic recognition and re-encoding of FSMs. The compiler also performs reachability analysis and eliminates unreachable states. Designed to be extremely easy to use, Synplify is also extremely fast; benchmarks reveal it to be 10 to 100 times faster than competing tools, while producing designs with better performance and area results. It includes a built-in language-sensitive editor that gives direct feedback for fast design debug To correct a problem in hardware or software. Debugging software means locating the errors in the source code (the program logic). Debugging hardware means finding errors in the circuit design (logical circuits) or in the physical interconnections of the circuits. .

About ispDS+

Lattice's ispDS+ HDL (Hardware Description Language) A language used to describe the functions of an electronic circuit for documentation, simulation or logic synthesis (or all three). Although many proprietary HDLs have been developed, Verilog and VHDL are the major standards.  synthesis-optimized logic fitter boasts the PLD industry's first architecture-specific synthesis and is engineered to produce optimal results when used in conjunction with high-level synthesis tools. As a result, system designers can obtain the best logic implementations of VHDL and Verilog-HDL based designs when using Lattice's ispLSI in-system programmable High-Density PLDs. ispDS+ includes an innovative Explore Tool that allows logic designers to automatically search potential logic implementations for best design fit and a timing analyzer to give accurate design performance analysis.

Pricing and Availability

Pricing for the combined Lattice and Synplicity package, called the ispHDL System for Synplicity, will be $3,995. This system will be available for shipment from Lattice during the third quarter on Windows 95 and Windows NT platforms. The standard Synplify 3.0 is available from Synplicity for $12,000. Floating licenses for UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
 or Windows platforms are $24,000.
