Synchron LX4201 From Beckman Provides Throughput Advances, New Technology For High-Volume Labs.BREA, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--Feb. 2, 1998--Beckman Instruments Inc., (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :BEC) has introduced the new Synchron LX4201 Clinical System for high-volume laboratories. Among its many technological advances are fiber optic cabling, distributed processing The first term used to describe the distribution of multiple computers throughout an organization in contrast to a centralized system. It started with the first minicomputers. Today, distributed processing is called "distributed computing." See also client/server. using "smart" modules, clot detection, serum indices and advanced data management capabilities. The Beckman Synchron LX4201 facilitates work station consolidation. The track-loading design is compatible with both robotic modular automation systems and conveyor-type total laboratory automation systems. Throughput is 2,880 tests per hour with an eight-second sampling cycle. The analyzer, which can accommodate more than 70 distinct onboard chemistries, provides a mini-profile of 11 chemistries in 40 seconds, including critical care analytes. More than 90 percent of reagents are liquid and ready to use. The LX4201 automatically detects the presence of clots that can impede normal sampling and interrupt workflow. Clot detection and correction are provided by a highly sensitive, pressure differential, transducer-based system. Serum indices are automatically detected by scanning the sample using the optimal wavelengths of light. The LX4201 spectrophotometrically inspects for and reports three potentially interfering substances: icterus icterus /ic·ter·us/ (ik´ter-us) [L.] jaundice.icter´ic icterus neonato´rum jaundice in newborn children. ic·ter·us n. See jaundice. , hemolysis hemolysis (hĭmŏl`ĭsĭs), destruction of red blood cells in the bloodstream. Although new red blood cells, or erythrocytes, are continuously created and old ones destroyed, an excessive rate of destruction sometimes occurs. , and lipemic. This reduces the need for a technologist's intervention while providing specific reporting of sample conditions that could cause an abnormal result. Serum indices and polychromatic polychromatic /poly·chro·mat·ic/ (-krom-at´ik) many-colored. pol·y·chro·mat·ic or pol·y·chro·mic or pol·y·chro·mous adj. Having or exhibiting many colors. corrections together provide the security of accurate results with a maximum freedom from both optical and chemical interference. The use of fiber optics fiber optics, transmission of digitized messages or information by light pulses along hair-thin glass fibers. Each fiber is surrounded by a cladding having a high index of refractance so that the light is internally reflected and travels the length of the fiber throughout the system provides greater speed, accuracy and system reliability. Fiber optics are not affected by environmental factors such as radio frequencies and electrostatic interference that occurs with analyzers using traditional cabling. Self-contained electronic "smart" modules monitor all vital functions of the system. This advanced, distributed processing approach means the system can self-diagnose and, in some cases, self-correct, resulting in higher reliability and less down time. Unique "on the fly" collar-wash technology in the LX4201 contributes to increased system productivity by eliminating non-productive cycle time typically used to wash sample and reagent probes. Advanced data management features include auto validation, results review editing, patient delta checking, reflex testing and patient result archiving. Other features include pediatric pediatric /pe·di·at·ric/ (pe?de-at´rik) pertaining to the health of children. pe·di·at·ric adj. Of or relating to pediatrics. direct tube sampling capability, advanced barcode capabilities, simultaneous processing of patient samples, calibrators and controls, modem diagnostics, and integrated CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc. CD-ROM in full compact disc read-only memory Type of computer storage medium that is read optically (e.g., by a laser). technology for quick loading and upgrading of system software.
