ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 4, 1999--

Supply Chain Management Software Optimized for the

Solaris Operating Environment In computing, an operating environment is the environment in which users run programs, whether in a command line interface, such as in MS-DOS or the Unix shell, or in a graphical user interface, such as in the Macintosh operating system.

SynQuest Inc. today announced its Supply Chain Performance Series application software is available on the Solaris(TM) operating environment, Sun Microsystems' version of the UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
(R) operating system.

The SynQuest Supply Chain Performance Series(TM), is a full suite of products used by companies to optimize, plan and synchronize execution of their supply chains. The software provides the decision support capabilities required by organizations to best manage material and information flow - from suppliers, through manufacturing and logistics activities, to final customers.

SynQuest was recently awarded a contract valued at over $11 million for software and services by Moore Corporation Limited. Moore selected the Sun SPARC (Scalable Performance ARChitecture) A family of RISC CPUs from Sun that runs mostly under Sun's Solaris, but also under Linux and BSD operating systems. After development began in the mid-1980s by David Patterson of the University of California at Berkeley and Bill (TM) Solaris platform to implement SynQuest software, including supply chain planning and manufacturing management applications, in a corporate-wide roll out. The software, running on Sun(TM) Enterprise servers and storage, will be implemented at 30 manufacturing facilities or more within the next three years. Moore, a $2.6 billion company, designs, manufactures and delivers end-to-end business communications solutions.

"With the addition of the Sun Solaris environment, the SynQuest Supply Chain Performance Series is available on all the operating environments, including UNIX and Microsoft Windows NT(R), that are popular with our customers," said Joseph Trino, SynQuest president and chief executive officer. "Now SynQuest users can take advantage of the highly scalable, reliable, Solaris environment to optimize supply chain performance."

According to Doug Kaewert, Vice President of Market Development at Sun Microsystems, "Manufacturers and distributors now can use SynQuest software in a Solaris environment to maximize return on investment in plants, warehouses, inventories and transportation, as well as other assets other assets

Assets of relatively small value. For financial reporting purposes, firms frequently combine small assets into a single category rather than listing each item separately.
. In the increasingly networked environment of global supply chains, the software platform must be as dependable as the telephone network. The Solaris environment is that platform."
