Symmetricom and Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) Present Timing and Synchronization in Next-Generation Networks Webinar.

Free ATIS ATIS - A Tools Integration Standard  TechThink Webinar will focus on critical need for precise timing and synchronization in next-generation networks - Thursday, November 9, 2006 - 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. EST

: SYMM SYMM Synchronized Multimedia (W3C Working Group) ), a worldwide leader in precise time and frequency products and services, today announced that the company will be presenting a free TechThink Webinar entitled "The Vital Role of Synchronization and Timing in Next-Generation Networks" along with the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solution (ATIS) on Thursday, November 9, 2006, 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. EST. The ATIS TechThink Webinar will focus on the increasingly critical need for precise and highly available timing and synchronization as the migration to the Next Generation Network (NGN (Next Generation Networks) An umbrella term for mixed voice and data networks running over the IP protocol. See IP Multimedia Subsystem. ) and convergence continues.
[TABLE OMITTED]

This ATIS TechThink Webinar will examine major timing and synchronization issues and challenges facing service providers as they roll out new services and the NGN. Synchronization, an integral part of the physical layer of the TDM network, has ensured optimal performance, or QoS (Quality of Service) of the TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) A technology that transmits multiple signals simultaneously over a single transmission path. Each lower-speed signal is time sliced into one high-speed transmission.  transport layer. NGN services like IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) Also called "TV over IP," IPTV delivers scheduled TV programs and video-on-demand (VOD) via the IP protocol and digital streaming techniques used to watch video on the Internet.  and VoIP also need timing as a service requirement. Accurate timing is critical for QoS Measurement, billing and IPTV service delivery. At the same time, synchronization required by legacy services also needs to be provided even though the transport layer may be packet-based. Thus, timing and synchronization design must be considered upfront in the development of the converged NGN to ensure appropriate QoS for services that traverse wireline and wireless IP networks.

ATIS TechThink Webinar presentations will include:

* Key challenges and considerations of timing and synchronization in a hybrid TDM/IP and "all IP" environment.

* As service providers migrate to the NGN and all IP environments, how timing and synchronization infrastructure needs to evolve.

* Status of standards development relating to timing and synchronization and review of contributions of Standards Development Organizations (SDOs).

This is the first in a series of three ATIS TechThink Webinars focusing on precise timing and synchronization. The second Webinar, scheduled for December 6, 2006, is entitled "Evolution in Timing and Synchronization Technologies - Key Emerging Timing Standards and Protocols for Next-Generation Network Infrastructure and Services." The third Webinar, scheduled for January 10, 2007, is entitled "Ensuring QoS in Next-Generation Networks - Real Time Applications, Timing and Impact on Carrier Infrastructure and Revenue".

About Symmetricom, Inc.

As a worldwide leader in precise time and frequency products and services, Symmetricom provides "Perfect Timing" to customers around the world, including communication service providers, network equipment manufacturers, U.S. Department of Defense (DOD (1) (Dial On Demand) A feature that allows a device to automatically dial a telephone number. For example, an ISDN router with dial on demand will automatically dial up the ISP when it senses IP traffic destined for the Internet. ), aerospace contractors, enterprises, governments and research facilities. Since 1985, the company's timing, frequency and synchronization solutions have helped define the world's standards, delivering precision, reliability and efficiency to wireless and wireline networks, instrumentation and testing applications and network time management. Deployed in more than 90 countries, instrumentation products include atomic clocks, cesium and rubidium standards, VME (Virtual Machine Environment) An operating system from Fujitsu Services (formerly ICL) that runs on its Series 39 mainframes. Introduced in 1975, VME is a comprehensive product that provides a variety of utilities for datacenter operations. , VXI (VME EXtensions for Instrumentation) A peripheral bus specialized for data acquisition and real time control systems. Introduced in 1987, VXI uses all Eurocard form factors and adds trigger lines, a local bus and other functions suited for measurement applications. , crystal oscillators, Bus Timing, PCI cards and Global Positioning System Global Positioning System: see navigation satellite.
