Security software maker Symantec Corp. recently ranked 43rd on Fortune's list of "The 100 Best Companies to Work For."

Symantec is based in Cupertino, Calif., and has 5,873 employees worldwide. It recently announced plans to merge with California-based Veritas Software Veritas Software Corp. was an international software company that was founded in 1983 as Tolerant Systems, renamed Veritas Software Corp. in 1989, and merged with Symantec in 2005. It was headquartered in Mountain View, California.  Corp., a leader in software storage and archiving. The merger is expected to close in the second quarter.

Symantec operates a customer service center in Springfield that employs 846 people. About 350 of those employees provide customer service and technical support to "enterprise" customers - large corporations, government agencies and universities.

Fortune, which published the list in its Jan. 24 issue, noted that 19 percent of Symantec's workers companywide are minorities and 31 percent are women. The average annual pay is $120,910.

The company's stock was up 150 percent in two years - good news for employees, who all are eligible for stock options and generous profit sharing profit sharing, arrangement by which employees receive, in addition to their wages, a share of the net profits of a business. The purpose is to give them an incentive to increase their output through enhanced morale, less wasteful use of materials, better care of , the magazine said.

Companies must be at least seven years old and have more than 1,000 employees in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  to be eligible for the Fortune list.

One-third of a company's score is based on its policies and culture; the other two-thirds come from the company's own employees.

A survey created by the San Francisco-based Great Place to Work Institute goes to 350 randomly selected employees at each company and asks about attitudes toward management, job satisfaction and cama- raderie.

Other national companies with offices or stores in the Eugene-Springfield area that made the list are Starbucks, American Express American Express (NYSE: AXP), sometimes known as "AmEx" or "Amex", is a diversified global financial services company, headquartered in New York City. The company is best known for its credit card, charge card and traveler's cheque businesses.  Recreational Equipment Inc., A.G. Edwards, Marriott International Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE: MAR) is a worldwide operator and franchisor of a range of value and luxury hotels and related lodging facilities. Marriott currently has 2,300 accommodation properties in North America alone. , FedEx and Sherwin-Williams.
