If the California-based company moves ahead with the expansion, it would mark one of the Eugene-Springfield area's biggest economic development boosts since Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. announced last year it would build a call center in Springfield's Gateway district. That facility is scheduled to open this fall with 250 workers and ratchet up to 1,000 by 2009. In preliminary plans submitted to the city, Symantec said it is tentatively ten·ta·tive adj. 1. The 850-employee customer service facility, which provides technical support to large business and government customers, has room for 1,000 workers. An adjacent, slightly larger building, probably would have the same or greater work force capacity, although in its paperwork to the city, Symantec doesn't mention how many jobs might be created. The company also doesn't mention a timeline

Symantec has never given a timetable for that potential expansion. Phil Weiler, a Symantec spokesman based in Springfield, could not be reached for comment Wednesday. John Tamulonis, the city's economic development manager, said Wednesday that the current Symantec building was designed so the company could create a mirror image building next door. Tamulonis noted that even with a large new building, Symantec isn't likely to double its employee count overnight. ``If there is an expansion, it might be 50 or 100 (workers) to start with,'' he said. ``They are at 850 now, and that took them five years to get to.''
