Halvorsen is director of the Information Sciences and Technology Laboratory (ISTL ISTL Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship ISTL Information Sciences and Technologies Lab ISTL Integrated Standardized Training Listing ) at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center Palo Alto Research Center - XEROX PARC . Halvorsen has extensive experience in private sector research activities and under his direction, ISTL has established a reputation as a leader in web and Internet research. The lab has conducted projects including innovative studies and simulations of the large scale dynamics of web usage. During his tenure at Xerox, Halvorsen has spearheaded the spin-out of several technologies from the lab's Internet research. In 1996, he was central to the creation of the Inxight Corp., to commercialize the ISTL's innovation in "Information Visualization" and lexical technology for analysis of multi-lingual content. From 1995-1998, he served on the board of directors of XBS/Document Technology Centers. Halvorsen is an inventor on more than 10 patents. In 1995, he created the Intellectual Property Working Group at Xerox PARC, which has implemented trend-setting IP management processes. In addition, Halvorsen maintains a broad set of collaborations with local, Asian as well as European research institutes. He and his team earned I.D. Magazine's bronze prize for their work in India in 1998. Halvorsen also serves on the board of directors of Autodesk Corp., and on the advisory board of Groupfire Inc., an Internet services start-up based on research from Xerox PARC.
