Swords to Plowshares, a community-based veterans' self-help group self-help group, nonprofessional organization formed by people with a common problem or situation, for the purpose of pooling resources, gathering information, and offering mutual support, services, or care.  founded in 1974 to advocate for veterans rights and to provide direct services to veterans, today announced the honorees of the Annual Profiles Of Courage Veteran's Day Dinner to celebrate the accomplishments of formerly homeless veterans. Homelessness is an alarming condition that affects veterans much more severely than the rest of the population. Veterans comprise about one quarter of the nation's homeless population, and nearly half of the homeless veterans served during the Vietnam War Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam. . At least 2,500 veterans are homeless in San Francisco.

"At Swords to Plowshares, we've been helping vets for nearly thirty years, by providing the tools to stem the problems contributing to homelessness - unemployment, lack of affordable housing, substance abuse, mental illness. And we can't do it alone," said Michael Blecker, Executive Director, Swords to Plowshares. "That's why we're so grateful to our partner service organizations, and we're very pleased to honor the Department of Veterans Affairs, San Francisco Medical Center, and Anne Harrington, San Francisco Department of Human Services at our Profiles of Courage benefit."
