Davis announced today that John C. Swonson Jr. will be senior vice president of the new USAA Western Operations Center The facility or location on an installation, base, or facility used by the commander to command, control, and coordinate all crisis activities.  in San Antonio. In that position, he directs the bank's sales and service, and consumer finance operations, home loan and automobile services, as well as credit policy and trust administration activities.

He joined USAA's management team in 1988 and has been with the bank since June of that year.

Announcing the appointment, Davis said Swonson has the record of success and demonstrated dedication to USAA's culture of service required to lead the association's Phoenix expansion. "Jack has the attributes that are important in the person who will represent our association in Arizona," Davis said. "He has the expertise to successfully lead and coordinate all of the support and management requirements involved in beginning business operations in a new location."

A commitment to USAA's military membership and understanding military life was also an important factor in Swonson's selection, Davis said.

Swonson retired from the Air Force as a colonel in 1984 after a 22-year career that included a range of USAF assignments in operational airlift and senior staff positions. He is a command pilot with more than 5,000 flying hours, including more than 800 combat hours in Southeast Asia.

The new USAA Western Operations Center chief is a 1962 United States Air Force Academy United States Air Force Academy, at Colorado Springs, Colo.; for training young men and women to be officers in the U.S. air force; authorized in 1954 by Congress.  honor graduate. He earned a master's degree in aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology California Institute of Technology, at Pasadena, Calif.; originally for men, became coeducational in 1970; founded 1891 as Throop Polytechnic Institute; called Throop College of Technology, 1913–20.  in 1964.

Swonson and his wife, Polly Ann, have two children and six grandchildren.
