The largest city in the U.S. School Construction Authority said, "The talented staff of Swanke Hayden Connell has designed a state-of-the-art school on a unique site. The design, which will enhance the community, incorporates 700 seats and two playgrounds, all within the limited size of the site." "We are very pleased to be recognized by fellow architects and are grateful to the New York City School Construction Authority for giving us the opportunity to develop a design that is both responsive and creative," commented Joseph J. Aliotta, AIA AIA - Application Integration Architecture , and SHCA principal. Designer Scott Habjan, AIA, has turned the challenge of creating a standardized school facility on a highly irregular-shaped site into an opportunity. The 98,000 SF building is organized into two sections: a four-story general classroom and administration wing (with a cafeteria and a double-height gymnasium), and a three-story arts wing, which houses the two-story auditorium, library, dance, music, and art classrooms. Where these two wings meet, a double-height glass entrance lobby opens to the street and playground. The lobby will be dominated by a 20'x30' mural of undulating woven silver mural by artist Oliver Herring (part of the City's one-percent for art program). Brick, glass, and distinctive highlights are used to distinguish the two wings. Both the main playground and the early childhood playground are located in the rear and are easily accessed from both the lobby and cafeteria. The SHCA team, in addition to Mr. Aliotta and Mr. Habjan, consists of Jeffrey Diehl, project manager; Antonio Donofrio, technical coordinator; and team members Jennifer Brown, Hugo Corvalan, Christian D. Giordano, Rudy Espiritu, and Nassir Muktar. The school is scheduled for completion in 2004. |
