Our study used four cationic starches (CS) with different degrees of substitution (DS) and viscosity, ammonium persulfate starch, and oxidized starch. We determined optical and strength properties of surface sized paper after surface sizing. We also measured printing properties and the effect of starch types on broke. We examined the benefits of using cationic starch at the size press on a paper machine equipped with a film transfer size press. Improvement in stiffness, opacity, brightness, printing quality, and picking resistance was observed when cationic starch was used in the film transfer size press, which allowed the use of more filler for cost reduction. Cationic size press starch improved internal bond strength, also. We noted diverse beneficial effects of improving white water quality when cationic size press starch was used, also.
