New SMP-SoftWire(TM) Product Extends Surf's Central Office-Strength

Access Solutions to Newest 3G Wireless and PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) The worldwide voice telephone network. Once only an analog system, the heart of most telephone networks today is all digital. Interworking depends crucially on standards to define the interfaces between the components.

Surf Communication Solutions Surf Communication Solutions develops a suite of hardware and software products that drives a wide variety of applications whose common goal is high-capacity distribution of voice and video.  today announced a software product that enables wireless equipment manufacturers to quickly provide converged internetworking solutions for their network service provider customers.

The new SMP-SoftWire(TM) product was developed by Surf from its experiences in the past two years implementing wireless-to-public switched telephone network InterWorking Function (IWF IWF Interworking Function

(DSP)-pool solution based on Surf's market-leading Surf Multi-access Pool(TM) (SMP) access technology. The new product enables manufacturers to incorporate converged voice, data, video and fax services into new wireless infrastructure products quickly and seamlessly.

The SMP-SoftWire solution runs on leading DSP devices and exploits an efficient scheduling system for unparalleled channel densities in carrier-class infrastructure implementations.

SMP-SoftWire software is "IP-ready," allowing easy evolution via software upgrades for voice fax and data over IP for wireless/IP network convergence.

Among the protocols incorporated in SMP-SoftWire are fax adaptation protocols GSM 3.45 and 3G TS 23.146 (3GPP fax adaptation), customized cellular V.90 modem pools for High Speed Circuit Switched Data (communications) High Speed Circuit Switched Data - (HSCSD) A planned feature of GSM Phase 2 defining a standard for circuit switched data transmission over a GSM link at up to 57.6 (78.8?) kbps.  (HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) An enhancement to the GSM mobile communications system that enables up to four 14.4 Kbps channels to be combined to provide 57.6 Kbps data transfer. ) and enhanced data rate EDGE/EHSCSD channels, and GSM AMR and FR voice coding.  V.120 and V.110 rate adaptation is also supported. Additional interworking protocols will be added to optimize the wireless/IP integration in the future, the company said.

Surf's open platform design supports a high level of customization to meet cellular infra-structure OEM requirements for reliable wireless service under a wide variety of communications conditions.

"Wireless networking has become an enormous sector within the emerging telecommunications infrastructure. As initiatives such as the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GGP) 3GPP2 and 3GIP GIP - 1. General Interpretive Programme.

are under way, there is massive global effort aimed at providing seamless transport of new wireless capabilities over other networks such as IP and PSTN. Surf is proud to provide essential technologies and products to make this effort a reality as soon as possible," Oren Somekh, Surf's vice president of research and development, stated.

The SMP-SoftWire software employs the latest 2.5G and 3G protocols, as well as supporting legacy protocol compatibility. A dedicated Surf technical team supports infrastructure product developers throughout the integration and field deployment process.

The SMP SoftWire solution is available now and has already been deployed by cellular infrastructure OEMs.

SMP Supports Wireless Solutions

SMP software, upon which Surf's new wireless software is based, is a solution increasingly incorporated into central office-class network products. Such CO-grade products require high-density modem pools to support converged data, voice and fax services operating at very high line speeds. Such software is embedded in the newest generations of DSPs that meet the high density, small space demands of a central office. By providing these capabilities, the Surf product set offers a powerful solution to manufacturers of remote access server (RAS (1) See network access server.
