Support people with disabilities at all levels. (National Therapeutic Recreation Society).


Regardless of whether you're a programmer, administrator, advocate or educator, the National Institute of Recreation Inclusion has an educational track to help you provide community services for people with disabilities. With more than 40 sessions at this year's institute, you'll have the opportunity to gain invaluable knowledge about inclusion. Scheduled for Sept. 8-11 in Las Vegas, the institute will feature presentations such as:

* From Monsters to Magic: Why Inclusion. Shannon Marling Marling can refer to:

  • Marling School in the UK,
  • Marling, Italy, a town in Italy

CTRS Center for Technology Risk Studies (University of Maryland) 
, and Colleen Wittig, CTRS, will identify the barriers that many stakeholders affected by inclusion services have, such as fear, control, cost and change.

* Beyond Disability: The Other Elements of Diversity. Dr. Deb Jordan of Oklahoma State University Oklahoma State University, at Stillwater; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1890, opened 1891 as Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, renamed 1957.  will discuss exclusionary policies, procedures and approaches for various elements of diversity, and their impact on various participant groups.

* Assistive Technology Hardware and software that help people who are physically impaired. Often called "accessibility options" when referring to enhancements for using the computer, the entire field of assistive technology is quite vast and even includes ramp and doorway construction in buildings to support  Makes Recreation Possible for All: Dr. Sherril York of Oklahoma Able Tech will define assistive technology, devices and services, and discuss barriers that prevent inclusion.

* What's Reasonable About this Accommodation?: John McGovern will discuss the Americans with Disabilities Act Americans with Disabilities Act, U.S. civil-rights law, enacted 1990, that forbids discrimination of various sorts against persons with physical or mental handicaps. , federal mandates and the use of reasonable accommodations.
