In the joint research, the two partners have analyzed and compared the levels of calories and essential fatty acids Essential fatty acids Sources of fat in the diet, including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Mentioned in: Nutritional Supplements in young female subjects (aged around 20) and elderly male subjects (aged around 67). The analysis results indicated that young women consume more calories than elderly men. In particular, the intakes of protein and fat are higher in young female than elderly male. The elderly male consumes more essential fatty acids including arachidonic acid arachidonic acid /arach·i·don·ic acid/ (ah-rak?i-don´ik) a polyunsaturated 20-carbon essential fatty acid occurring in animal fats and formed by biosynthesis from linoleic acid; it is a precursor to leukotrienes, prostaglandins, and , DHA DHA docosahexaenoic acid. DHA, n.pr See acid, docosahexaenoic. and EPA EPA eicosapentaenoic acid. EPA abbr. eicosapentaenoic acid EPA, n.pr See acid, eicosapentaenoic. EPA, n. than the young female. Regarding the levels of essential fatty acids in the body, however, there is not any significant difference between the two subject groups. Rather, the level of arachidonic acid is lower in the elderly male than the young female. Essential fatty acids, which are commonly included in meat, eggs and fish, are an important nutrient that helps enhance brain functions. Copyright [c] 2006 Japan Corporate News Network.
