Sunday supper at Marche simply super.

Byline: The Register-Guard

It's the end of a long weekend spent entertaining out-of-town guests. Your parents, your in-laws, your who- ever.

You've visited the wineries, hit Saturday Market, maybe caught a performance at the Hult Center.

Now it's Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists. ; they leave in the morning. But before you can drown in a sea of mind-numbing, amnesia-inducing cable television, you must arrange the "good-bye, thanks for coming, see you in six months" farewell dinner.

Where to go?

Team Best of ... recommends sundaysupper at Eugene's Marche Restaurant. It's a surefire hit that will delight even the pickiest foodie - and help preserve your sanity.

Each week, chef Jon Henry focuses his impressive culinary skill on this family-style dinner. Henry's creative, delicious and seasonal menu uses the same organic, chemical-free ingredients from local farmers and ranchers that Marche owner Stephanie Pearl Kimmel is known for.

A recent dinner began with white bean soup with mussels, moved on to linguine with lamb sugo, broccoli raab broccoli raab or broccoli rabe

"Sounds fabulous," you say. "But how will this preserve my sanity?"

The meal is served family-style, meaning everyone who signs up for sundaysupper sits together at one big table in the middle of the restaurant. Talking among the diners Diners can mean:

At this dinner, your visitors inevitably will be drawn into conversation with the other diners, for whom you will develop a sincere, if temporary, love. These other diners will take up the mantel of conversing with your guests, freeing you of the burden of entertaining their inquiries about your career goals, your plans for children or your weight.

You can enjoy that linguine with lamb sugo in relative peace and serenity. And you can sip the French table wine ($12.50 per carafe) without anyone making a snide remark about maybe you've had too much to drink.

And because everyone eats the same thing, there will be no tiring debate about what to order, and no passing "tastes" of your meal to others on a bread plate.
