Sunday liquor sales become legal in Massachusetts.


Massachusetts lawmakers have dumped a centuries-old policy of prohibiting statewide alcohol sales on Sunday.

The ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages

 was a relic of the state's Puritan past. The new statewide policy, which lawmakers approved in November, permits alcohol sales on Sundays, but allows municipalities the option of sticking with the ban. The lawmakers cited economic reasons for ending the Sunday liquor liquor /li·quor/ (lik´er) (li´kwor) pl. liquors, liquo´res   [L.]
