SunSoft expands Wabi line with new server product; SunSoft first to provide competitively priced UNIX-based server solution for Microsoft Windows applications.

Expo, SunSoft Inc. introduced its new WabiServer product, a server implementation of Wabi, its popular Windows-to-UNIX translation solution.

Low-end SPARC (Scalable Performance ARChitecture) A family of RISC CPUs from Sun that runs mostly under Sun's Solaris, but also under Linux and BSD operating systems. After development began in the mid-1980s by David Patterson of the University of California at Berkeley and Bill  systems and X terminals, previously unsupported by Wabi, can now act as full clients in a server implementation to run Microsoft Office Microsoft's primary desktop applications for Windows and Mac. Depending on the package, it includes some combination of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook along with various Internet and other utilities. , Lotus SmartSuite A suite of applications for Windows from IBM Lotus that includes the 1-2-3 spreadsheet, Word Pro word processor, Freelance Graphics, Approach database and Organizer PIM. Also included is a common toolbar for launching the applications and selecting predefined macros that provide tighter  and other popular Microsoft Windows applications. In addition, WabiServer provides MIS managers with better central management of their Microsoft Windows applications within the Solaris environment.

WabiServer allows Wabi-certified Microsoft Windows applications to run on a server with Solaris 2.x and to display on low-end SPARC systems, X terminals, or machines with Solaris 1.x. In addition, WabiServer provides an option for Solaris "power users" -- designers running a CAD package, for example -- who typically use all of their CPU CPU

processing power. These users can now utilize WabiServer for productivity applications, freeing up their local CPU to run their powerful Solaris applications.

"WabiServer is just the latest in SunSoft's innovations to provide Solaris customers access to whatever application they want to run," said Andrew Halford, general manager of SunSoft's PC compatibility products. "WabiServer addresses the needs of Solaris customers who want to be able to run Windows applications in a group setting; it also gives MIS managers the ease of administering numbers of Windows users. All this plus the robust, secure environment of Solaris."

Most cost-effective solution

WabiServer provides the lowest-cost UNIX-based Microsoft Windows application server solution on the market. Compared with competitors such as WinDD from Tektronix and HP500 Windows Application Server from Hewlett-Packard, WabiServer costs significantly less. For example, using the minimum software-only configuration for each respective product, WinDD costs $352 per user, and HP500 $267 per user. In comparison, WabiServer costs just $100 per user. For even a small workgroup of 10 people, WabiServer amounts to savings of $2,520 against WinDD and $1,670 against HP500.

Reducing costs, increasing efficiency

WabiServer gives multiple simultaneous Solaris users access to Microsoft Windows applications, thus reducing the need for a PC next to every workstation. According to according to

, this can save a corporation up to $8,00 per PC per year. This number includes hardware, software and support costs. Across just a 20-person workgroup, this can amount to $160,000 in savings each year. WabiServer also helps companies preserve the value of older workstations by allowing their legacy hardware, such as low-end SPARC systems and X terminals, to be set up as clients.

In addition, for MIS managers who support and manage Microsoft Windows applications in the Solaris environment, WabiServer provides the administration tools and functionality needed to simplify administration tasks. For instance, installation of Microsoft Office using floppy disks may easily take over two hours per user. With WabiServer, installation is significantly simplified. System administrators have the flexibility to define multiple application environments for different departments, depending upon users' needs. For example, a marketing environment could include applications such as Microsoft Word A full-featured word processing program for Windows and the Macintosh from Microsoft. Included in the Microsoft application suite, it is a sophisticated program with rudimentary desktop publishing capabilities that has become the most widely used word processing application on the market. , PowerPoint and Aldus PageMaker; and a finance environment could include Lotus 1-2-3, AmiPro and Organizer. Users can then select the appropriate department applications environment. Therefore, MIS managers need only install programs -- and upgrades -- once, saving MIS time and money.

With WabiServer, MIS managers can configure clients to get full priveleges, such as access to floppy drives on both the client and server machines, allowing them to share documents between their home and work computers. Clients can also be configured to access client and server printers from within their Microsoft Windows applications.

Additionally, WabiServer reduces the storage space required for each licensed user by eliminating the need for Microsoft Windows applications to be kept locally on a user's hard disk. And WabiServer can comfortably handle 12 to 16 users per CPU, which allows MIS managers to amortize server hardware costs over more users, thereby lowering capital costs per user.
