Sun and Kodak Announce Initiative to Provide Digital Photo Management and Internet Distribution Solutions; Kodak's PixFactory Suite Now Available For The Sun Platform.

LOS LOS Length of stay, see there  ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 12, 1997--Today at Internet World Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , Sun Microsystems Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA[3]) is an American vendor of computers, computer components, computer software, and information-technology services, founded on 24 February 1982. , Inc. and Eastman Kodak Company announced a joint marketing agreement aimed at providing state-of-the-art image management and digital photo distribution solutions over the Internet.

By combining Kodak's new PixFactory software with Sun's Java(TM) technology and server platforms, businesses can use the Internet and corporate intranets to efficiently and securely manage and distribute critical image assets.

The joint agreement will leverage the strengths of two industry leaders, Kodak, the leading imaging and photography company, with those of Sun, the leader in networking and Internet technology, to produce breakthrough solutions for a broad spectrum of customers handling valuable photographic archives and branded image and photo content.

Using FlashPix technology, Kodak's PixFactory software suite provides digital photo management and distribution capabilities to users looking to store and distribute photographic quality images on the Internet. A Java player will provide cross-platform access to FlashPix images and support thin clients like Sun's new JavaStation(TM) network computer. A PixFactory Media Streamer module, optimized for Sun's Netra(TM) j and UltraSPARC(TM) server platforms, will enable online interaction with FlashPix files.

"Offering Kodak PixFactory software for Sun servers makes it possible for customers to purchase image-enabling modules to address their unique media management and distribution needs," said Scott Rafer, director, Digital Motion Networks for the Kodak Professional Motion Imaging business unit. "Entertainment, advertising and broadcast customers can now leverage critical image assets across Internet and intranet systems using a technology proven to make highly efficient use of system resources (1) In a computer system, system resources are the components that provide its inherent capabilities and contribute to its overall performance. System memory, cache memory, hard disk space, IRQs and DMA channels are examples. ."

"Digital Media Management solutions from Sun and Kodak will enable entertainment and publishing executives to realize the promise of a networked digital infrastructure," said Bill Correll, worldwide market development manager, media, entertainment and publishing industries, Sun Microsystems Computer Company. "PixFactory software, Java and Sun's scalable network servers reduce the cost of maintaining and accessing valuable photographic and image assets and create new revenue opportunities through the repurposing of content."

"We handle thousands of image types every day for our clients in the media and entertainment industry and need to convert them as quickly as possible to a universal platform," said Bill Copeland William John (Bill) Copeland, (born 16 August 1929 at Warrnambool, Victoria), was an Australian Test cricket match umpire, from Victoria.

He umpired 1 Test match in 1980 between Australia and England at Sydney on 4 January to 8 January 1980, a low-scoring game with bowlers
, president ProCD. "PixFactory software running on the Sun platform will make this an easier process, as well as providing us with many other creative possibilities such as sharing images and collaborating over the network with clients and moving content to CD or other format faster than ever before."

Sun is demonstrating PixFactory on a Sun Netra j Java Computing computing - computer  server at Sun booth No. 1100 at Internet World. The Netra j servers provide Java-client management and access to legacy databases. Netra j servers are an ideal platform for application development and deployment of transaction- and process-oriented business applications. Clients for PixFactory which are supported by Netra j are also being ported to Sun's JavaStation network computer platform.
