Sun Turns UltraSPARC-II Microprocessors Up To 360 MHz; Suped-up Processors Drive Sun's Newest Workstations.

, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 5, 1998--Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced that it has once again raised the performance level of the UltraSPARCTM microprocessor family with the release of a 360 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  version of the UltraSPARC-II microprocessor.

This new speed grade, along with the recently announced 333 MHz version of the UltraSPARC-IIi microprocessor, continues to demonstrate the robustness and scalability of the industry's most dynamic 64-bit microprocessor architecture.

The 360 MHz UltraSPARC-II processor is powering Sun's new UltraTM 60 workstations, which are also being announced today (see separate release from Sun).

 delivers a SPECint95 rating of 16.1 and a SPECfp95 rating of 23.5. The UltraSPARC-II processor can sustain dedicated bandwidth to main memory to the order of 1920 Mbytes/second, far exceeding other industry players -- which top out at around 600 Mbytes/second.
